Sonny Clark may not have been a household name, but he was among the finest hard bop piano players. Midday host Rhonda Hamilton remembers Sonny as a leader and a sideman on the 73rd anniversary of his birth starting at 12 noon ET.
Wayne Shorter on Jazz Profiles (July 23-24)
With over forty years of music-making, saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter has given his spirit, intelligence, humor, and his singular vision to jazz. A leading figure in hard bop and jazz rock, his sound and style had a pervasive influence in later 1960s and early '70s jazz. He has worked as a bandleader of his own groups, as the musical director of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, as the primary composer in the Miles Davis Quintet, and as a co-founder of the band Weather Report. Hear his story Friday at 11 p.m. ET, repeated on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET.
