HIGH POINT -- The City Council voted unanimously Monday night to make an
offer on legendary jazz singer John Coltrane's childhood house.
High Point Mayor Becky Smothers said several local nonprofit
organizations offered to renovate the dilapidated house at 118 Underhill
St. if the city would purchase it.
The organizations, which the mayor declined to name, also will run
programs at the home, she said.
"I think this is a wonderful start to a complete revitalization to the
Washington Drive neighborhood," Smothers said. "There is so much history
