Maybe that relates to Ornette's comment about playing in turne but
still being "flat." lol. The other horn player who springs to mind is
Von Freeman -- both he and Jackie seem to use pitch to further
heighten the emotional message of the compostion.  Just as some
players will play ahead of and then behind the beat or monkey around
with the beat, so McLean and Freeman relate to the note's pitch value,
if that's the right terminology, with a similiar abandon.
