[JPL] Walter Becker blindfold

Hi Rick,

Yeah, I know it was tenor.

I just wanted to see if I could support Becker's humor, support the Soprano,
and kill a thread at the same time.

I'm still stunned that my two cents ain't worth a plugged nickel 'round
here.

Rick - you have no idea how much I appreciate a direct response. Thank you
sincerely.

Hey Rick,

Wayne played a totally amazing solo on Aja, but it was on tenor. I'm
unaware of any other performance with SD, but hey, I'm not an expert.

Thanks,

Rick McLaughlin

Continuing the deserved recognition of the Soprano and the humor of Becker,
I wouldn't be surprised if he'd make comments like that right in front of
Wayne Shorter. Shorter defined the Soprano sound for many younger players
and even played with SD.

In fact, some of Shorter's work on Soprano has had me jaw dropping on
several occasions when he was with Weather Report. Moving the mic away from
the bell and his ability to tongue (pun intended) gave him a unique sound
that still gives me chills. Native Dancer is just scary good.

The soprano sax is much more firmly in place in jazz today, than say the
clarinet (once popular, now much more rare). Jae's list of current or
recent practioners is certainly evidence of that.

I wasn't as serious as might have appeared. But it does seem to be true that
soprano sax has a greater difficulty finding its place in Jazz than most
other reed instruments. Most instrumentalists choose a primary instrument
and than a distant second. Almost none (Liebman the seeming exception on the
current
scene) have made a stand with the soprano as their primary instrument.
There must be a reason.

I confess that soprano is my least favorite of instruments that appear
within the Jazz context, though I cited some positive examples. Tongue was
firmly implanted in cheek when I referred to soprano versus "real"
instruments...I should have added an emoticon.
