Featured on the next Jazz Northwest is an NEA Jazz Master who's been a
part of more jazz history than most any other living musician.
Clarinetist Buddy DeFranco began his career during the Swing Era in the
late 30s, was a participant in the birth of Bop in the 40s and has
collected dozens of awards as top clarinetist from DownBeat, Metronome,
Playboy and others. He has performed all over the populated world,
made hundreds of albums, many with jazz giants, and is the subject of a
lavishly illustrated new biography, "A Life In The Golden Age of Jazz"
published by Parkside Publications.

On this edition of Jazz Northwest (September 3), The Buddy DeFranco
Quintet is heard in a concert recorded in July at Centrum's Jazz Port
Townsend. Also on this program will be two songs sung by young Sara
Gazarek who began her career in the Roosevelt High School jazz program
in Seattle. Following her jazz studies at UCLA, she is now
experiencing her first tours, festivals and CD. She will also appear
at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle on September 5 & 6.

Jazz Northwest airs Sundays at 1 pm Pacific Time on 88-5, KPLU and
kplu.org and is made possible by The Boeing Company. This program will
also be available as a podcast during the week after the broadcast.
