For first time in Yemen, a jazz band from the United States is scheduled to
perform in two cities in the country next month. The Ministry of Culture,
in cooperation with the United States Embassy in Sana’a, is hosting a
group, known simply as the American Jazz Band, for two unique public
performances in Yemen. According to the embassy’s press release, it is
the first visit to Yemen by an American band in over six years.

The first performance will be in Sana’a on July 3, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at
the Yemeni Cultural Center. The second concert will be held the following
day in Aden on July 4, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. on the grounds of the German
Consulate. Admission is free, the embassy said. The band includes
Guitarist Andrew Shantz who has played piano since he was eight years old.

He has performed with and led jazz groups throughout high school and
college before joining up with the other members of the American Jazz
Band. Bassist Jay Foote, a musician, composer and improviser, he plays
jazz and other musical genres. Foote has studied with many masters across
the United States.

Singing from a very early age, Boston-born vocalist Abigail Riccards has
begun to make a name for herself in the jazz community. Since being a
semi-finalist in the 2004 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition,
Abigail has completed her Master’s degree and is about to release her first
album this fall.

Drummer Daryl Anderson was born and raised in Connecticut. He has been
fascinated with drums and has been working with them since high school. He
currently owns and operates his own customized drum company.

Daryl performs with a variety of bands ranging from jazz, rock, and
electronic music and also teaches music. Saxophonist Zack Colwell has
performed in Korea and has toured Germany and Spain with the Bannen Temple
Group. Zack is scheduled to release a recording later this month.
