I'll be the first to admit my take on things is highly subjective and
biased.  But, I call it as I see it. 

I'm not sure exactly what line I crossed, but that is part of my overall
message. Lines need to get crossed. Lines are the limiting, closed
parameter, boundaries that isolate things rather than bringing them
together. 

It's a personal thing with me and trying to sugar coat it and "normalize"
it, won't push things forward. I don't know how to explain this correctly,
I'm not a politician, but I meant to be offensive and meant to get attention
and meant to cause people to re-examine the status quo. 

I crossed the line the moment I opened my mouth. 

I appreciate your point of view and disagree that it's open season, and that
disagreement works both ways. We're all entitled. I'm just a fly in the
ointment and if I crossed lines - that's perfectly ok with me. I should say
that I totally respect Wynton as a musician, but not as a spokesman. I also
respect Frank Zappa as a musician, but don't like his music (it doesn't
"groove" to me). I'm sure I crossed someone's line by saying that too. That
doesn't invalidate what I'm saying or at least everything I'm saying. 

I'm not the end all expert here. Far from it. I'm just a fan with a point of
view and an internet connection. You guys are the pros. But you and I both
put pants on the same way and there's no humiliation in being a college drop
out that doesn't make a living in the music business speaking out and saying
something that might offend the people that do. 

I'm not sorry that I crossed the line - I hope to cross many more.

First you come in here dissin programmers then Wynton and now folk are
ignorant. You've gotten some love on some of your posts and now it's open
season apparently on anyone that doesn't get it in your view. I can't speak
for anyone else but that crossed the line with me.

Didn't know that Curt posted that. 

"Tennis without a net" is my all time favorite example of someone that has
no clue what Jazz Rock Fusion is all about. (I remember falling on the floor
laughing when I watched it on PBS). It's the kind of thing someone would say
about an entire genre that knows nothing about it. For example, when you
generalize about piano players and can't tell the difference between Chick
Corea and Herbie Hancock, or even better, between George Duke and Jeff
Lorber, you're just ignorant. Not right or wrong, just ignorant. Yet those
people are the ones that get attention (that's why they were interviewed),
so their opinion becomes fact, when it's nothing of the sort. 

Now that's really sad. When the "pros" are ignorant and don't just own up to
a simple admission that they don't "like it" and therefore won't comment
further. Instead, they act as if they know something the average person
doesn't, and the impression is that their comments have real credence, when
it's just their personal rationale for not liking it. 

All that analyzing just to say it's not Jazz or not music - Gimme a break. 

I don't buy it for a minute. Plus, I doubt that it served any real purpose
other than to dissuade people from finding out for themselves. 

I might as well say it now and get it out there - Wynton is a terrible
ambassador. Great musician, bad statesman. If he stopped and prefaced his
comments with "this is my opinion" it would be different, but he speaks like
the Jazz Encyclopedia was written by him. Not good for anybody. 

I'm gonna get thrown out of this room yet...

A page on a Joe Zawinul fan site has excerpted transcripts from the complete
interviews from the Ken Burns Jazz series in which the interviewees discuss
fusion. I checked a couple of the transcripts (which are linked to from
that page). I think the comments from the folks are interesting. Joshua
Redman is very positive on the genre; others are lukewarm to nasty.
