Excellent points, Jan!  Especially about the "requirements" of  
marketing.  The audition process would definitely make sense for  
large ensembles / bid bands!  - Mitchell

I would venture to guess that blind auditions in jazz would produce
multi-racial groups with equal gender as well as age distribution.   
Music  doesn't
know these differences, and most musicians I know really don't   
care.  It's when
it comes time to market the music that those  things usually come into
consideration.  (My 2 cents~)
