Hi Jan, 

I'm not sure that "hanging and seeing what other's have" is going away
completely. Maybe the eye to eye contact and the obvious enthusiasm for the
music you're talking about with someone next to you is going, but the idea
behind "Gee, have you ever heard Eddie Gale" exists in cyberspace. Well,
it's getting there. 

As Linda pointed out, the internet is making the world smaller and
approaching musicians directly is a wonderful thing for those of us old
enough to remember when it was thrilling to be waiting in line at the
concert venue and seeing the musician walk in, or spotting them in the crowd
at a Jazz Festival. That cultivates a lot of energy for a fan and they are
probably more likely to share their contact [or just brag] in some way that
would benefit others. 

Places like Jazz Corner and All About Jazz, are the substitution for that
eye to eye contact. With the US and most of the world living in the "Age of
Fear", there is a lot of "I'll look, but not contribute or participate"
holding the Internet and new communities back from their full potential. But
they are certainly there. Some of the music forums out there are very busy
places and people hook up for concerts all the time over the internet.
Before the Indianapolis Drum forum went down, they had regional parties,
where groups of participants from a particular region would all get
together, bring their drums, and have a blast. I went to two of them in
Northern California - what a gathering they were. Talk about networking...

Personally, I loved going through the bins and reading covers that led me to
other bins and other covers and on and on. My favorite was finding a record
that was completely out of place because there was only one left and the
person wanted it so bad, they moved it to another place in the store until
they could get their money together and buy it. Dave Liebman's "Sweet Hands"
lasted many days in the Barbara Streisand bin. 

With all the musicians that are now their own record companies as well,
there is another real problem, that the internet doesn't solve and the
record store takes away. Most great musicians are NOT great business people.
When they catch on to newer marketing strategies and the power of the
Internet beyond opening a store on their website, things will really start
to take off. 

I'm trying to convince artists to freely share some of their soundboard
recordings of live concerts to promote their "Official releases".  It's the
oldest marketing strategy in the world - "The first one is free" and it's
being accepted like free aspirin at a hemophiliac's convention. 

As I said earlier, the circle is just starting again, and hopefully in our
lifetimes, we'll see the re-emergence of the appreciation of spiritually
powerful art.

This works, except when the artist is dead or the CD is not in print, the
artist has no pressings to send....

The BIG deal about retail record shopping, IMHO, is the synergy of shopping
with other people who are interested in music!  Combine that with a staff of
music-lovers (as was the case for many years in many stores) and every one
is richer for the experience.  Folks get turned onto music they would have
overlooked, find artists they never heard of etc, somebody keeps their job,
adds to the local economy....

It's one thing to say 'gee, I want to get a copy of Eddie Gale's "Ghetto
Music", log on & buy one'.  It's another thing to be hanging/shopping and
have somebody see what's in your hand & say 'gee, have you ever heard Eddie
Gale?'.

This is what is going away, not just with Tower, but lots of places and I
think it is very sad.

I literally thank Jah ever day for Music Millennium here in Portland and
give them as much money as I am able!
