Hello everyone,

I'm beginning to get caught up with reviewing new music after our fund
drive. When you see the list I post next Monday, you'll know see what
I mean.

Even so, with all of the music I've heard and programmed this week,
I'm quite curious about the three releases discussed on the list
Friday.

Like Mitchell, I could use contacts for the new Ornette Coleman CD and
Tone Center.

I'm also curious about the Stanley Clarke CD. He's admired by many
listeners and I'd like to give them a chance to hear the disc.

If you have those contacts, you can e-mail me off list if you like.
Thanks.

A disc that I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing was by The Todd Marcus
Orchestra. What magnificent arrangements! If that one is still in
your pile of stuff to listen to, pick it out. You won't be
disappointed. Not every song is good for every daypart, but it is a
real good one for cleaning out your own ears so you can go back to
listening to the adnauseum bebop change quartets/quintets, the similar
sounding piano trio sessions and the barrage of cute but cookie-cutter
singers.

I was also surprised by the Brain Trainor and Friends CD. Jon
Lucien's "Feeling Good" gets the point across and them some!

Keep swinging,

Linda

I believe EMI is thinking in the right direction.

Remember when we lugged all those albums from one place to another and got
up to change songs manually? I don't think the Cd is immune to that kind of
place in history.

In the old days, when buying a stereo system, bigger was better. It's still
that way, but only in Home Theater. The trend now is smaller is better (Mp3,
iPod, etc.) Look at headphones - remember when those gigantic Koss
headphones were the real deal, and now people buy Q-Tips with wires.

Lossless Audio files (FLAC, Shorten, APE, even Real, Mac, and Windows have
their own versions) are the bridge between Cd's and the next phase of
digital music storage systems.

It won't be that long before the Home Stereo Hardware folks are making retro
players to accommodate Cd's. If you're like me, you already have some kind
of Home Network so you can play all your music files that are on your PC on
your big rig too.

I just had to share this story.....it reminded me of a thread we had a few
years back about library space but this one is unbelievable......

For years our music library contained both the classical, jazz and folk
music recordings. Several years ago I weeded out a few thousand albums and
CD's that either we would never play or had been re-issued on CD to make
more room for new releases. Eventually we moved all the CD's out into my
office space and left the remaining jazz albums in the library. A week ago

A week ago
they decided to do the same for the classical albums......clear out the ones
they don't want to make more space. There are several thousand jazz albums
that are still in the library.....at least 10,000.

I was told about this and I sent emails out reminding folk not to touch
the jazz LP's. They had students and volunteers come in to do the work. Last
Sunday...during our fundraiser I might add.....I came in to do my show. I
had planned to play about 10 albums on that show. I walked into the library
and every single jazz album in the library......GONE. I can't remember how
long I looked at those shelves wondering if I had walked into a parallel
universe.

To make a longer story short.....I found out later that afternoon that the
albums were in the dumbsters behind the building. THOUSANDS of jazz classics
in the garbage! The garbage trucks come first thing Monday morning to empty
them. To say I was shocked would be the understatement. Without question the
most stupid thing I have ever seen in my life. I was on the phone to
management and shortly after the person responsible for this was out back
with their buddies in the dumpsters bringing back in those albums on that
Sunday afternoon. There are stories of some walking away with several
unfortunately and we won't know which ones until we get them back in order.
That individual is no longer employed at the station.

This was passed to me by Bob Porter...

Did you hear the new definition of 3perfect pitch2?
That is when the accordion you are throwing into the

This recording is indeed from an old session originally called:

"Jazz Straight Up"
Vertical Jazz #5502-2
("Recorded direct to two-track with no mixing, editing, or overdubbing")
At Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood May 2000
C & P 2000 - Recording Arts SA/Vertical Jazz Records
Fine Tune, LLC
12 Burdick Dr.
Albany, NY 12205

It is quite excellent, with great liner notes.

Per Cd Universe (Also selling the new Cd/DVD combo):

Stanley Clarke; Patrice Rushen; Ndugu Chancler. Recording information: Ocean
Way, Hollywood, California (2001). Originally released in 2001, this trio
session featuring the bassist Stanley Clarke performing jazz and pop
standards with the drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler and the pianist Patrice
Rushen was re-mastered and reissued in 2006 with two extra tracks, plus a
bonus 30-minute DVD containing interviews and four additional tracks.
Clarke's first performance on acoustic bass in over two decades, the set
features bop classics like "Now's the Time," and "Salt Peanuts," the
post-bop "Jeru," and a stately version of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," as
well as jazzy standards like "Mack the Knife" and "Perdido." Clarke's nimble
playing skillfully underpins Rushen's confident soloing, while Chancler's
buoyant percussion frames and propels each piece.

(CD with DVD) This session was originally released on the short-lived
Vertical Jazz label. It has now been re-mastered for Kind of Blue Records
with 2 additional tracks. Released for the very first time is a 30 minute
bonus DVD of the recording sessions

Audiophile Imports is selling it this month as a feature. I can't believe on
this outlet they would be selling this against the artists wishes but it may
be out of the artists control. Anyone remember that Al Jarreau "1965"
release? I thought that his best record ever interestingly enough but he
never wanted it released.

My understanding is that Stanley's cd is being released without Stanley's,
Patrice's and Ndugu's permission.

Here's one to watch for. It moves from blazing
to beautiful. I haven't heard anything by this
artist in a long time and wow!

Alto saxophonist Bunky Green's Another Place.
It's due out next month on the French label, Label Bleu.

With Jason Moran, Lonnie Plaxico and Nasheet Waits.
Produced by Steve Coleman (hence Label Bleu), recorded
in NY in 2004.

I know collectors that would pay good money for those recordings. I own
several thousand albums still and have received offers from many to take
them off my hands. I just can't bring myself to give them up. Even the
ones I have CD's of.

I find it awful that they would just throw those lps away. They could have
attempted to donate them to the town or city library, perhaps a university
or
another radio station would have used them. The idea that they just threw
them away makes wonder, "What were they thinking?"

I have a very large lp collection. Someone estimated it to be about 20,000
albums a few years ago. I have lots of different kinds of music, especially
from the 70s when I worked at WBCN in Boston. Lots of jazz, r&b, funk,
gospel, disco, etc. An old friend of mine sent me a handwritten list. Both
sides of a piece of notebook paper were filled with lps he was looking for.

I assume he was looking for samples. I didn't sell him any. I told him that
the fact that he was asking about them would make me not want to sell them
to
him. They became more valuable musically.

I'm with you, Brother Jackson! I don't want to give up any of my lps and I
know I have lots of stuff on lp that have never been reissued or especially
with the non-jazz stuff, it's not a CD buying priority for me so I'll just
live happily with my lps.
