The Charlie Rouse/Sahib Shihab recording "Soul Mates," the Charlie
Rouse/Red Rodney recording "Social Call" and the Don Sickler album
"Night Watch," I believe, all on Uptown, are examples of how well
VanGelder recorded the player's individualism over some uniform
digital code of recording: there's no mistaking Red Rodney's trumpet
sound for Sickler's, and Rouse never sounded better on record. Also
the Jimmy McGriff records made at VanGelder's for Milestone,
especially the one featuring both McGriff and Dr. Lonnie Smith, are
super sonic, unlike any other organ sound until then.
