I believe that instead of pounding our collective heads against the wall of what they think they want to hear, or "chasing their ears" as I call it, we should have honesty and integrity about broadcasting Traditional Jazz, and we all need to market ourselves. Billboards, Flyers, Brochures via direct mail, an occasional print ad, local concert programs, having our DJs emcee local jazz events, member incentive programs with local businesses, etc......hell, "trade out" the marketing if you have to. The listeners NEVER know that we exist until we tell them we exist. We have to be "in their face" in order to compete with those commercial radio guys. Heck, in Las Vegas, we have a situation where every consumer here is literally BOMBARDED with marketing images.....thousands per day.....from our casino resorts alone, not to mention all the TV and radio stuff out there. KUNV is surviving

Our station, KUNV 91.5FM Las Vegas, has begun a member incentive program that gets them discounts at local merchants and restaurants byy being members of KUNV, and it's working. Our DJs go to local Jazz concerts, festivals, night clubs, and Jazz brunches to shake hands with the public etc., they like to see us....they are curious. Our numbers are not too bad these days. If we start "chasing" their ears, we lose a very important concept. I believe we need to present a format where whenever the listener tunes in, they know what to expect. I am currently doing 4 air shifts per week, and an interview show. I do not "chase" the ears of my listeners, I give them a very stylistically consistent playlist daily, and they are responding by listeneing daily. I get phone calls from at least 4 new listeners per week saying that they are glad they found us! If you employ the old retail sales concept of "The Rule of Fives", each one of those 4 have 5 friends, who have 5 friends, who
have 5 friends. who have 5 friends.........................The numbers start to add up.....

KUNV 91.5FM - Las Vegas is the broadcast service of UNLV, and we proudly broadcast Real, Acoustic, Traditional, Mainstream Jazz 5 days a week 24 HOURS A DAY!
