PREMIER SUNDAY on Beyond Jazz…XM 72
Coming up is possibly the most eclectic and international collection of new music we’ve ever featured as we invite you to hear five new releases for the first time this Sunday July 1st, another Premier Sunday here on Beyond Jazz!
First, you’ll hear deep, unique future-jazz that is sonically fascinating created by three international players. It’s guitarist Nguyen Le, and his new release titled “Homescape.” He recorded it in his home studio in Paris, where he was born of Vietnamese parents, with the help of Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu and Tunisian artist Dhafer Youssef. You have never heard anything quite like this.
Then, it’s two vocalists from outside the USA with great, new work. You’ll hear Canadian-born vocalist and pianist Carol Welsman, with help from Jimmy Haslip and Eric Marienthal among others, on her new release simply titled, “Carol Welsman,” followed by a fine and funky collaboration between the legendary Joe Sample and a vocalist/trombonist named Nils Landgren who hails from Sweden but sounds like he’s from Mississippi. Their new CD is titled “Creole Love Call.” It was recorded in New Orleans and let me just warn you…it’s just funky as a bowl of grits.
We’ll top it all off with two new works featuring violin, but with two completely different approaches. First, it’s some new-fusion from Russian-born violinist Joe Denninzon, and his band Stratospheerius turning it on and turning it up on their new one titled “Headspace,” followed by a more cerebral approach with beats by Daniel Bernard Roumain, aka DBR, joined by DJ Spooky and others for “etudes4violin&electronix.” Let me put it this way…these two guys aren’t whipping out the old fiddle for a little tune if you know what I mean.
Listen for cuts from these five new releases beginning at 10 PM Eastern/7 PM Pacific, right after THE MOJA REPORT with MARK RUFFIN on another Premier Sunday…part of The Sunday Specials, from XM 72, Beyond Jazz.
