Album of the Week

The Bad Plus - Prog (2007 Do The Math Records)

Vocalist Caitlin Smith first appeared on my "it's A Jazz Thing" show mid
2006 and turned me on to the piano trio "The Bad Plus".

Truly great trios produce a sound and a feeling that makes you think the
band is a lot more than merely three. There are a few piano trios in jazz
that do this extremely well; Esbjorn Svensson Trio, Neil Cowley Trio and The
Bad Plus.

The Bad Plus fuses indie rock, progressive jazz and edgy pop on its new
recording, Prog. The tracks they have covered are at first sight not ones
you would think would work in a piano trio setting - given The Bad Plus
treatment they work very well indeed.

Cheers, Mark
