Album of the Week

Toumani Diabate - The Mande Variations

(2008 World Circuit)

Toumani Diabate is now recognized as one of Africa's most gifted musicians.
The master kora player has a stunning new cd release featuring visionary
interpretations of classic themes alongside groundbreaking improvisational
pieces.

Toumani Diabate was born in the Malian capital Bamako in 1965 and comes from
a line of 75 generations of kora players. The kora resembles the sound of a
harp and is still made in the traditional way. A large calabash is cut in
half and covered with cow skin to make the body or resonator to which is
attached a notched bridge like a lute or guitar. The kora has 21 strings,
eleven played by the left hand and ten by the right.

All pieces on this release are solo with no backing band. Audio engineering
is superb with every subtle tone captured. This is a cd to dip into to be
taken away to exotic places. Truly world jazz music at it's best.

Thanks to Elite Music for NZ distribution and supplying the CD for review.

Cheers
