A friend of mine who is a retired social sciences professor used to play  
Stan Kenton's "Prologue: This is an Orchestra" to his classes.
 
For less Jazz-oriented listeners, there's "Are You Lonesome Tonight."
 
Duke's "Pretty and the Wolf" is more of the genre, though: dirty story,  etc. 
I believe that must have been pre-1960.
 
Both of the latter two are more appropriate for Black History Month, of  
course.
