Ginza Jazz Festival packing in jazz fans

The Yomiuri Shimbun

Visitors to Tokyo's famous Ginza shopping area this weekend will have
the chance to enjoy some free, cool vibes when the fourth Ginza
International Jazz Festival kicks off tomorrow.

The festival organizers have invited 14 jazz groups from Japan and
overseas to perform at seven venues in Ginza on Saturday and Sunday.

This year the event is not limited to standard jazz but also takes in
Latin and club music.

Italian jazz trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso teams up with the Javier Girotto
to present improvisational jazz, mixing standard jazz and Afro-American
beats.

From Paris, the Parisi Musette Trio will perform popular numbers from
French movies such as "Love in the Afternoon" and "Under the Roofs of
Paris" with accordion and guitars and featuring guest vocalist Awa.

Tenor saxophonist Andy Snitzer has played with various pop and rock
musicians from the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton to Paul Simon and
Christina Aguilera. This weekend, his quintet will be joined by jazz
guitarist Chuck Loeb and vocalist Amanda Brecker--the niece of Michael
Brecker.

Canadian singer Emilie-Claire Barlow will tackle a range of styles, from
jazz scat to bossa nova and ballads.

The domestic acts on the bill will cover a wide range of music,
including jazz, world and dance music.

Female artists will dominate as violinist Naoko Terai, saxophonist Kaori
Kobayashi and Saori Yano present their energetic sound, while Karen Aoki
and Yoshika Kitanami provide vocals.

Carlos Kanno--founder of the Nettai Jazz Gakudan--has created a special
group--"Nettai Superjam,"--to give Ginza some Latin rhythm, while Orange
Pekoe, featuring Tomoko Nagashima and Kazuma Fujimoto, will present a
mix of jazz, Latin and soul music.

Two male quartets--Quasimode and Jammin' Zeb--offer different approaches
to danceable up-beat and mellow a cappella, while the Shima & Shikou
Duo, with trumpeter Yusuke Shima and pianist Shikou Ito, will perform
groovy jazz.

Advance tickets have already been snapped up, but it will be possible to
get into the four concerts that will be take place at the Matsuya Ginza
rooftop venue during the weekend. On Saturday, Kanno will be on stage at
1 p.m. and Orange Pekoe at 5 p.m., while Sunday sees Kobayashi at 12:45
p.m. and Quasimode at 5 p.m. Entrance will be on a first-come,
first-served basis an hour beforehand. For more information, call (03)
