JazzWeek did a cover story of Leigh a few years ago in its February 9, 2005 issue "Legends in Radio Q & A: Minnesota Public Radio's Leigh Kamman".
I am organizing a tribute to Leigh Kamman - host of MPR's "THE JAZZ IMAGE". He retired from hosting that show (after almost 35 years) last September. This party is a celebration of his entire 65 plus years on the radio starting with his interview of Duke Ellington in 1939 when Leigh was only 17 years old.
Any of Leigh's friends on the JPL who would like to send greetings and best wishes to Leigh for this tribute - please write to me off list at wendolinasings at live.com.
The party is Sunday, September 28th and I'd love to hear from people who wish to be included by the end of this week.
Here is a link to a short video retrospective on Leigh's wonderful career. It is about 9 minutes and takes a moment to load up:

A Tribute to Leigh Kamman at the Artists' Quarter on September 28
Leigh Kamman, the legendary radio broadcaster whose career spanned more than 65 years of jazz, will be celebrated at the Artists' Quarter on September 28 at "A Tribute To Leigh Kamman: Urban, Suburban & Way Out." With a house band led by pianist Laura Caviani, many musical guests will perform and Leigh will be on hand to share a few memories. More details can be found at <www.artistsquarter.com>.
Live jazz, an art form that has benefitted immensely from Kamman's role as eloquent radio messenger, will be the focus of the tribute. Organizers plan to pay tribute to Kamman's entire career, including his early days in New York and his years on KSTP and MPR in Minnesota, but promise that "the bebop will outweigh the speeches." Wendy Plaster, an organizer of the tribute, said, "This is going to be a relaxed and fun musical event that will be a chance to say 'thanks' to a man who has done so much for jazz and jazz musicians. I know a lot of Leigh's friends and fans haven't had a chance to celebrate his incredible career, and what better way to do it than with a party and some great live jazz."
"A Tribute to Leigh Kamman: Urban Suburban & Way Out" will start at 7:00 pm on Sept. 28 at the AQ, 7th Place and St. Peter in the Hamm Building downtown St. Paul, (651) 292-1359, <www.artistsquarter.com>.
