Jazz Release of the Week

Tim Warfield

One For Shirley

(2008 Criss Cross Jazz)

This week's CD of the Week is reviewed by "The Jazz Rep" who hosts a 2 hour
show every Friday at 3am, 9am and 9pm on George Jazz.

Something to celebrate, Tim Warfield has made a new album as leader. The
first in five years, so he has made it gem. It is dedicated to a recording
colleague, friend and mentor Shirley Scott. The album is called "One For
Shirley" and it is on the Criss Cross label. With these musicians; Tim
Warfield, Terell Stafford, Pat Bianchi, Byron Landham and Daniel G Sadownick

With good compositions, it is a great deal more than a tribute album. Tim is
on really good form as is Terell Stafford on trumpet and flugal, both of
whom played in the late soulful organists Shirley Scott's group in
Philadelphia. Warfield, featured on both tenor and soprano saxophones,
incorporates slower grooves, very cool, with a soulful approach, that seeks
out the more rhythmic and funky sounds of jazz.

Although at times, there is something of 1960's Blue Note sound, the
wonderful Hammond B3 is every bit 2008 jazz. This marvelous instrument is
played by Pat Bianchi, Denver born, and quite a new name, but has been
playing in the Nicholas Payton's band. The drums are handled by Byron
Landham and Daniel G Sadownick on percussion. Some of the tunes are from
Shirley's repertoire like Stomping At The Savoy, Yours Is My Heart Alone and
the lesser known Make It Last.

Tim's compositions are an added bonus, the blusey Tokyo Girl played on
soprano and the up tempo, furious One For Shirley. I was very pleased to see
Duke Persona's composition Christo Redentor. Please don't make us wait as
long for the next album Tim.
