WKCR-FM, Columbia University's radio station in NYC, is programming John Coltrane's music throughout the entire day of September 23. He was born in 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, red clay country near the South Carolina state line, and graduated from William Penn High in the piedmont in High Point. There is a highway marker near his birthplace in Hamlet and a statue in High Point. We North Carolinians are extremely proud of John Coltrane and the 74, and counting native North Carolinians who are jazz personalities, like Max Roach, Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone and Dr. Billy Taylor. These are well-known ones, but, there are others who are not as well-known, like Billy Kaye, Hugh Brodie, Harold Vick and Waymon Reed, Sarah Vaughan's fourth husband. Jazz is alive and well thanks to John Coltrane and the legacy he left his native North Carolina. The state has a thriving jazz scene because of Trane and all the others who have become positive role models for the young up and coming jazz musicians. Listen to WKCR-FM and hear why we love Coltrane in North Carolina! Thank you WKCR-FM!
