Jazz Release of the Week

Jose James

The Dreamer

(2008 Brownswood)

Vocal Jazz is not going through a particularly good time. Many new releases
are full of songbook classics delivered in standard format by vocalists who,
whilst competent, offer nothing new.

The arrival of Brooklyn based vocalist José James is a breath of fresh air.
Listening to Jose one hears touches of all the great Jazz Vocal masters but
the baritone singer takes all of those voicing's and creates his own sound.

Jose James is also set apart from many vocalists by the quality of his
compositions and lyric writing. Not only has Jose penned new lyrics to many
of Coltrane's most well know compositions (as heard on previous EP releases)
but also composed several songs on this release. And at the age of 28 this
cat has a long bright future ahead.

The Dreamer is a hugely impressive debut. Jose and the band deliver classy,
stylish and downright sexy jazz. I received a txt message on my radio show
yesterday when I played Park Bench People that said Sexy and classy like a
fine Gill Scott track. The punters certainly like it

Accompanied mostly by piano, double bass and drums the singer handles his
laid-back, often self-penned material with assurance. Standout track for me
is the cover of Bill Lee's Nola from the Spike Lee film She's Gotta Have It
- it is an incredibly intelligent piece of music fusing jazz, acoustic hip
hop beats and pop lyrics.
