While it's not the same as a CD (or LP for that matter) many releases 
that do not exist in physical form will remain "in print" digitally 
(including the Complete Herbie Nichols mentioned in this thread.)

While economics may limit the number of releases that labels can afford 
to keep in print as CDs, the economics of digital download may make 
other releases available that never would be reissued.  Apple's 
announcement of DRM-free, 256K files could lead to some high-quality 
digital availability soon.
