As promised, Josh Cole bassist and principal composer for the October Trio
came down to chat about the new release with Brad Turner on Songlines and
the associated CD release event at the Western Front on Friday January 23rd
at 7:30 pm - $10 at the door, $20 includes the CD! Had an interesting chat
covering the background of the group and the recording, antecedents for both
the tenor trio format and the tenor/trumpet front line format, the use of
harmonic concepts in those formats, experiences at the Banff school,
inspirations for composition and the importance of writing relevant music
(Dave Douglas: "If you write a composition about a cheeseburger, don't
expect people to connect with it!"). Had a fun chat and if you can't make it
to the concert, you can catch the live webcast on Simon Fisk's web tv site
http://www.plungerecords.com/?news (follow the links - requires the latest
flash player from Adobe).

Tony Reif, the 'sole proprietor' of Songlines Recordings (see
http://songlines.com/) also came by for a bit of a survey of recent and
upcoming releases. Songlines has specialized in audiophile releases (many
hybrid-SACDs) which cover a broad spectrum and mix of jazz, improvised,
contemporary classical, world, ambient/electroacoustic/electronica and other
unclassifiable sounds: stuff Tony likes - I can relate ...

Besides the October Trio + Brad Turner, we heard Ryan Blotnick (young
guitarist from the east coast who has worked with Michael Blake), guitarist
Brad Shepik (from his suite addressing global issues and musical styles),
the second release from Wayne Horvitz's Gravitas Quartet (featuring Peggy
Lee on cello), Sean Noonan (Tony refered to it as punk jazz but I thought it
had more prog rock - think dense King Crimson - elements, features Marc
Ribot and Jamaladeen Tacuma), Poolplayers (improvised but prepared super
silent electronically processed in real time), and tenor player Tony
Malaby's new trio with cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and percussionista John
Hollenbeck. We got about half-way through the stack so we'll have to
schedule a return visit.

With all that, still managed to squeeze in some previews, Jodi Proznick was
at the Cellar last weekend, and Ross Taggart will be having his cd release
there at the end of the month. Played an advance copy of Jon Hassell's new
ECM release in anticipation of his concert at the Chan in mid February. Two
recent releases are dedicated to the late Doug Riley both recorded in
Toronto and both featuring guitarist Ted Quinlan: drummer Ted Warren who
brings his Warren Commission to the Cellar at the beginning of February and
an organ trio led by Tony Monaco with a great workout on the Don Patterson
classic.

One more from Bill Frisell's latest on Nonesuch (coming in a duet with
Russell Malone in March), and a nod ahead to inauguration day.

It's been a long time, but I know
A change is gonna come, oh yes it will

N.
