[JPL] Vocalist for RMM Tropi-Jazz All Stars & Los Jovenes del Barrio passes away

Powerful and versatile vocalist, Jillian Armsbury  began her career singing
background on Mongo Santamaria’s late 1980s Concord recording, “Olé Ola,
then with her timbalero husband Johnny Andreu “Almendra’ founded the
swinging NYC based charanga ensemble, “Los Jóvenes del Barrios” (the Spanish
Harlem Youngsters), they recorded several albums for the now defunct RMM
label, Jillian and Johnny also were members of the RMM Tropi-Jazz All-Stars
and are on Volume 1 and 2 of that aggregation’s live recording. Jillian sang
a nice version of “Everyday I Have the Blues” with the late Hilton Ruiz and
Juan Pablo Torres soloing. She passed away Thursday evening Jan  22nd in NYC
of breast cancer, she was an community activist and in 2001 lead a
musician’s protest of several NYC Latin FM stations that refused to play NYC
based musicians. She led a successful campaign that forced the stations to
include locally based NYC musicians in there mix because of her protests and
getting sponsors to boycott the stations by refusing to buy ads.
