NYC jazz musician to honor Sotomayor
July 21, 2009
NEW YORK - Jazz musician Arturo O'Farrill is creating a new piece to
honor Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
Symphony Space, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and R.D. Rice Construction
Inc. commissioned the piece for Sotomayor, a Bronx native.
O'Farrill's Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra will perform the work.

The composition will have its premiere on Nov. 5 at Symphony Space, a
performing arts center on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

The orchestra's mission is to "preserve, perpetuate, and innovate"
Afro-Latin big band jazz. O'Farrill says there's no better way to
fulfill that mission than to honor the woman who would be the high
court's first Latina.

The New York federal appeals court judge is expected to easily win
Senate confirmation next month.
