June 2009: Ernest Ranglin
This month Global Village features music from one of Jamaica’s most accomplished and admired guitarists, Ernest Ranglin. Ranglin’s studio work in Jamaica helped shape the sound of ska. He appeared on Millie Small’s breakthrough international hit, “My Boy Lollipop,” and worked with the Wailers, Byron Lee, the Skatalites, Jimmy Cliff and other popular island artists. But some of his best work would come later in a series of solo albums that drew not only on those Jamaican roots, but also on his initial love of jazz and growing interest in a variety of African musical styles. Throughout the month, Global Village will highlight music from throughout Ranglin’s career, from early ska through those fascinating Ranglin sets as leader.
