July 2009: Madagascar
This month Global Village continues its summer island hopping adventure with music of Madagascar.
Like the remarkable flora and fauna of this island nation, the music of Madagascar is diverse, florid and unlike anything else in the world. But until the 1990s, when Globestyle released its Madagasikara series and David Lindley and Henry Kaiser produced A World Out of Time, virtually none of this music was available here. Since then a number of talented groups and artists have recorded and toured internationally, including Tarika, Jaojoby, Rajery, D’Gary (who most recently was part of Bela Fleck’s African Project tour and CD) and more.Throughout the month, Global Village highlights music from Madagascar, from traditional sounds to some of the latest contemporary bands and artists.
Listen to Global Village weeknights at 9 p.m. and several times a day on KMUW-HD2. From classic recordings to the latest new releases, from right around the corner to halfway around the world, host Chris Heim presents a wide range of world music, along with jazz, rock, folk and other styles, artists and songs with world and roots influences. Each month, Global Village also focuses on a particular artist, style or theme, going deeper into the music and offering some rare and seldom heard selections. And the first Friday of every month, hear the best new releases with the Global Village Top 30 show, which also airs Fridays on KMUW-HD2.
Each night is a different journey, with music that sounds unusual and intriguing, yet still seems very close to home.
