Back in the saddle again, and had a great chat with Cory Weeds in the studio
starting with the observation that he'd been on the show as a club owner, as
a guest host, as a tour organizer (Cross-Border Jazz), as a record label
owner but this was his first appearance talking about Cory Weeds the
saxophone player. But with an upcoming tour (with trumpeter Jim Rotondi) for
the Everything's Coming Up Weeds release which has been sitting in the top
10 US jazz charts, it seemed like a good time to cover that base too. Had a
great free-wheeling discussion that ranged from experiences recording the
album to the recurrent "why isn't jazz dead yet" mailing list and forum
discussions.

Also chatted about his gigs on the weekend at the Cellar and in Seattle with
trumpeter Thomas Marriott which plumbed some of the thornier gems in the
Horace Silver songbook. I made it down for the second set on Saturday and
heard Nutville, The Jody Grind, Lonely Woman (featuring Sharon Minemoto in a
trio) and Blowing the Blues Away with a guest spot for trumpeter Chris
Davis.

Also some tunes looking forward to Gretchen Parlato with Taylor Eigsti
kicking off what looks to be a spectacular jazz series at the Capilano
Theatre - see
http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/performing-arts/season-performances/jazz.htmlfor
details. Some other recent releases (spectacular dates from Christian
McBride and Grant Stewart etc) and fun stuff and a re-entry sendoff to
Amanda Tosoff and Morgan Childs who are winding their way to Toronto after a
couple of gigs this week, bon voyage!
