May 2010 Feature:
In Celebration of Asian Heritage Month – Music
of Vietnamese Guitarist Nguyen Le

This month Global Village features music of guitarist, composer,
arranger and band leader Nguyen Le. Born in Paris to Vietnamese parents, this former philosophy student
turned self taught musician first made his mark on the music scene with
the world music-inspired group Ultramarine. He released his first album
as a leader in 1990 and has followed with a series of provocative and
inventive recordings  -  several done in collaboration with Paris-based
Vietnamese singer Huong Thanh - that combine jazz, Vietnamese, Latin,
African and Indian music.  In addition, Le has worked with an impressive
list of artists that includes Vince Mendoza, Art Lande, Ornette
Coleman, Paul McCandless, Uri Caine and many others. Throughout the
month, Global Village will highlight music of Nguyen Le, from
collaborations to his work as a leader and  from his early days in
Ultramarine to his newest CD Saiyuki, just released in the United
States.

Produced and hosted by Chris Heim, Global Village airs Monday through
Friday at 9 p.m. on KMUW FM89.1. You can also hear Global Village on the
KMUW-HD2 24-hour music service Monday through Thursday at midnight, 9
a.m. and 2 p.m. and Fridays at 5 p.m. The Global Village Top 30 Show,
the first Friday of every month on KMUW and every Friday on KMUW-HD2 at
noon and 8 p.m., highlights the latest and best in world music new
releases. You can listen online, and find complete KMUW and KMUW-HD2
