Happy late birthday Sonny!

The fact that the Kennedy Center hasn 't given Sonny or Roy or Cecil or Ornette
one of their honors is a travesty. And yet they give one to the Who or to
Oprah? Pleeze.....

don't get me started

I'm happy to say I was there too, and it was as magnificent and
beautifully-realized as Nate Chinen reports in today's Times. In addition to
the tunes cited, Sonny played "I Can't Get Started" and "Raincheck" with Roy
Hargrove, so the concert was essentially a retrospective of Sonny's career, the
material drawn from his 1955-'62 period. He opened with two originals,
including a calypso featuring a long exchange with Sammy Figueroa. Long live
the Saxophone Colossus, Ornette and Roy Haynes; may they all be at the ready to
join Rollins for his 85th.
