Indian-born tabla drummer Zakir Hussain has brought his distinctive sound to many musical contexts over the past forty years. He's forged creative associations with everyone from Grateful Dead percussionist Micky Hart to jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin. His current collaboration finds him in the company of banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer. The three have been happily weaving together elements of folk, classical and jazz musics for several years now - documented on their 2009 E1 recording "The Melody of Rhythm," which features the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

You can hear an interview with Zakir Hussain on April 5 at 10 a.m. EDT during "Out Here & Beyond," the Tuesday Morning jazz program on WWUH 91.3 FM (streaming at www.wwuh.org). Chuck Obuchowski, host of "Out Here & Beyond," will conduct the interview and will spin a variety of recordings which feature Hussain's outstanding tabla work in jazz settings.

Zakir Hussain joins Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer in concert on Friday, April 8 at 8 p.m. at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, 2132 Hillside Rd., at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. Details at www.jorgensen.uconn.edu and 860-486-4226.
