[JPL] Sonny Rollins HONORED

I must say that following the lively song and dance numbers and choice
film footage in tribute to Meryl Streep which opened last night's
telecast, the Sonny Rollins presentation was a let down. It was great
to see Jimmy Heath and Benny Golson, and Christian McBride looked
relaxed, but otherwise it felt stiff and superficial. The music
producer would have done well in recruiting Grant Stewart and/or Joshua
Redman as contemporary players who pay tribute to Newk almost every time
they pick up their horns.
Still, every second of Sonny on view is a thrill, and good for Bill
Cosby to underscore what a rare honor it is for a jazz artist who's
internationally renowned to be recognized here at home.
