Legendary saxophonist CHARLES LLOYD is about to embark on an East Coast tour with his quartet, following the success of “Mirror,” his latest recording on ECM Records. This Tuesday, January 18 at 10 a.m., EST, you’ll have an opportunity to hear an interview with Charles Lloyd during “Out Here & Beyond,” Tuesday Morning Jazz on WWUH 91.3 FM at The University of Hartford (streaming live at http://wwuh.org).
Chuck Obuchowski, host of “Out Here & Beyond,” will conduct the interview and is going to feature tracks from several Lloyd recordings, including “Mirror.”
Charles Lloyd has been a major contributor to the art of jazz since the 1950s, and began receiving international attention upon joining Chico Hamilton’s group in 1961. Lloyd formed an immensely popular quartet in 1966 that included Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. The California-based saxophonist attracted a following with rock audiences years before jazz fusion existed; he began exploring world music sounds during the 60s as well. Lloyd has worked with everyone from Cannonball Adderley to the Beach Boys during his lengthy career.
Lloyd's New Quartet – with pianist Jason Moran, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland – will perform Tuesday, January 25 at The University of Massachusetts in Amherst (www.umass.edu/fac) and Friday, January 28 at Wesleyan University in Middletown (www.wesleyan.edu/cfa).
WWUH offers jazz programming Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – noon and Tuesday through Friday from 9 p.m. – midnight, EST. For a comprehensive listing of upcoming jazz events throughout Connecticut, call the WWUH Jazzline at 860-768-5267.
