I'm with you Jae, I think if they were too use Jazz as a reference point for what they are playing it would go a long way towards changing people perceptions of Jazz

Exactly Jeff. It's in his DNA so why deny that's what you're dealing with? I've talked with many musicians and several feel that the jazz mantra works against them having marketing success. That's sad to me but I think too musicians underestimate fan, reader, listener, etc...perception in reference to the things they say. People hear us and if we're saying... nah...we're not playing jazz...what does that mean to them? It's already confusing as hell for a lot of folks. For many musicians...saying you're playing jazz is old, dated, repeating history, etc. The irony of it is that most of these musicians are still playing jazz but are dying to call it something else.

Jae - I would agree. Personally I have always approached Jazz as a big tent music (much to the dismay of some over the years) and have no problem referring to Christian or any of the younger players as Jazz musicians. I kind of prefer it. I think given how Jazz is perceived in other music communities they may feel a greater sensitivity to the Jazz reference but I think of Christian as a Jazz player and feel he brings those sensibilities to his other musical contexts.

Jeff, I understand their points. Great insights on this generations thinking and I understand the way they're relating it in the context of their music. I do it too. I will also add that I enjoy Christian's music...particularly his first two releases. Where I take exception is if it's presented that it's some sort of negative by associating your music with the label. If you play jazz say it... and if you're playing other styles with them being inclusive...then say we also have other elements in the music. Varied. Is there someone on this list that doesn't think Christian isn't playing jazz?

I think Nicholas is just adding his voice to a number of other younger musicians who feel this way. I mentioned the Jazz Times Harlem article. I believe Nicholas was also mentioned in it. It was a good article and worth checking out for some context to all of this

Any chance he's parroting this recent screed by Nicholas Payton?

Plus his uncle is Donald Harrison and I once saw a show at the House of Blues in NOLA when Donald had him come up and join him and he blew the hell out of some bebop with the band.
