I've been following this discussion and am a bit perturbed and saddened.  I do 
understand and appreciate all of the points of view, but I wonder how making our 
community even smaller than it already is - and in a racial way no less! - can 
help this music.  Where does it leave me?  I call myself a jazz musician because 
I studied and continue to study and play jazz.  I perform professional musical 
programs that include swing, bebop, bossa novas, blues, ballads, and original 
music, much of which would fall into those categories.  In my solo work in 
healthcare communities I also include show tunes, patriotic songs, spirituals, 
ethnic and folk music.  I'm still a jazz musician.

It's an age-old dilemma.  In college (ages ago!) I wrote papers about this same 
discrimination against the word jazz, which is a Creole word with distinct 
meaning (jass).  That in itself brings up plenty of social implications, and as 
a woman in this business I think that is still affecting us too.  I had hoped by 
now we would have come together more and gotten past all that divisiveness.
