*Did you know that Paul Winter, the soprano saxophonist who's been
synonymous with New Age/World music for over 40 years, began his career
as a hard-swinging alto saxophonist who loved Cannonball Adderley and
Phil Woods?Winter is celebrating the 50^th anniversary of his sextet
with a pair of concerts on Wednesday and Thursday at the Mahaiwe Theater
in Great Barrington, Mass.Three of the group's original members, pianist
Warren Bernhardt, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Harold Jones, will be
joined by trumpeter Marvin Stamm and baritone saxophonist Howard Johnson
in the Berkshires. They'll be playing music from their original
repertoire, which specialized in music by Jimmy Heath, Tom McIntosh,
bossa nova and classic blues.*
*In 1961, Indiana native Paul Winter was studying English at
Northwestern University when his Chicago-based sextet took First Place
honors at the Intercollegiate Jazz Festival in Washington, D.C., and in
no time he was signed to Columbia Records by John Hammond; played a
23-country State Department tour of Latin America; and accepted an
invitation from First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to perform at the White
House, the first jazz group ever to play 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.*
