About 2 weeks ago, Dianne Reeves mother passed away, she was a enthusiastic supporter of musicians, live jazz and blues concerts, and staunch supporter of KUVO, she was part of an extended family that includes Dianne's cousin-George Duke, Denver pianist Purnell Steen, the elder statesman of Denver's musicians and the "Jackie Robinson of Classical Music"-nonagenarian bassist, Charles Burrell.

Last week we also lost the owner of the legendary El Chapultapec Jazz Bar-Jerry Kranz last week which over the decades has been host to a myriad of jazz and blues giants-Red Holloway, Eddie Harris, Dakota Staton, Ricky Woodard, Teddy Edwards, Richie Cole, the club where Javon Jackson-Brad Leali, Greg Gisbert and other Denverites cut their teeth in the jam sessions that took place there just about every night and where visiting jazz dignitaries like Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts et al would go to hang and jam after their performances in other venues around Denver

Monday afternoon Denver's "greatest ambassador for blues and jazz", ,the former Lou Rawls drummer, vocalist, promoter, record label owner, talent scout, the always dressed to the nines, huge music supporter and KUVO Major Donor, James van Buren passed away at 77 from prostate cancer. Tonight Tuesday's planned medical funds benefit for JvB will now be a fund raiser for his final expenses James wore a perpetual smile and was one of the most charismatic persons ever to walk this planet, he was beloved by his fellow musicians here in Denver where he called home since the mid-70s and across the land. He will be forever missed!
